Neuropathy & Peripheral Nerve Conditions
Peripheral neuropathy can result from numerous metabolic, nutritional, toxic, autoimmune, hereditary, compressive, traumatic, and idiopathic causes. A careful evaluation helps characterize the neurological pattern, identify relevant risk factors, and determine whether additional medical testing or referral should be considered.
Clinical Evaluation of Neuropathy
Symptoms such as numbness, tingling, burning, weakness, or balance problems may reflect peripheral nerve involvement, central nervous system findings, or a combination of both. Careful examination helps distinguish these patterns and guide appropriate next steps.
Dr. Albright's evaluation is individualized to the patient's history, symptom pattern, and clinical findings. Recommendations depend upon the cause, severity, duration, examination findings, and coordination with other providers.
Electrodiagnostic testing such as EMG and nerve-conduction studies may be recommended or ordered through an appropriately qualified provider when the clinical presentation warrants further investigation.
Common Presenting Complaints
- Numbness or reduced sensation in feet or hands
- Burning, tingling, or electric-type pain
- Muscle weakness in extremities
- Balance problems or unsteadiness
- Sensitivity to touch
- Difficulty with coordination or fine motor tasks
Evaluation Components
Assessment of sensory patterns, motor strength, reflexes, coordination, balance, gait, functional limitations, and signs suggesting central versus peripheral involvement.
Review of diabetes and glucose regulation, nutritional factors, thyroid history, medication and toxin exposure, autoimmune history, prior injury, entrapment or compression, and family history.
Existing laboratory findings may be reviewed. Additional testing may be discussed, recommended, ordered when permitted and appropriate, or coordinated with another healthcare provider.
Electrodiagnostic testing may be recommended or ordered through an appropriately qualified provider when the clinical presentation warrants further investigation.
Recommendations are individualized based on the cause, severity, duration, examination findings, and coordination with other providers.
